What is PLUR?
PLUR is an acronym for four values: Peace, Love, Unity and Respect. Together, these principles form the unofficial moral code of rave culture.
The four pillars of PLUR
☮ Peace: you leave everyday tension, ego and prejudice outside the gate. The dancefloor is a de-escalation zone.
❤ Love: the kind of openness you extend towards strangers. Human connection is worth more than status.
🤝 Unity: your job, your income, the brand of your clothes and your politics don’t matter. In the music, everyone is equal.
✊ Respect: you accept a no, you don’t leave your rubbish behind, you look out for the person next to you. This is what makes rave sustainable.
Where does PLUR come from?
The roots of PLUR go back to the early 1990s New York rave scene. According to the most frequently cited origin story, DJ Frankie Bones first articulated the principles at a 1993 event called Storm Rave, after a fight broke out in the crowd. By the late 1990s, PLUR had become closely intertwined with kandi culture — the hand-strung, colourful beaded bracelets.
The PLUR handshake and the kandi ritual
The kandi handshake is a four-step sequence of hand gestures during which a kandi bracelet is passed from one person to another: Peace (peace sign), Love (heart), Unity (interlocking fingers), Respect (sliding the bracelet onto the other person’s wrist). PLUR in Europe and in Hungary
Today it’s a global phenomenon — Berlin’s techno culture and the Belgian and Dutch house parties have all taken it up. In Hungary, the PLUR outlook is increasingly present through Ozora, VOLT, Sziget and the underground raves around Budapest.
